Cisternino, Puglia

On our first full day in Italy we took a drive to Cisternino. Beautiful old town close to where we are staying. The photo directly below is from the central park area, showing a nearly full picture of the valley facing side of the town. It is, like many Italian towns, built upon a hill in a quite compact manner. In the town centers there is foot traffic only allowed, which makes it nice for just wandering around within the many alleyways.

After walking a few miles we stopped for a drink at a Caffetteria

Within the labyrinth of the city streets are a million little shops selling souvenirs, ceramics, clothing, leather, olive oil and wine and the list goes on. Of course there are also several restaurants. They open at noon and close at 3pm and don't open again until 7 or 8pm. In fact, the shops close at 1pm and don't open again until 5pm. The streets are deserted from essentially 2pm to 5pm.
